Europe must not be forced to choose sides in rivalry b/w US and China: France Army General Francois Lecointre

The chief of the defense staff of France, Army General Francois Lecointre has said that while it will be difficult for the European Union (EU) to forge a common political identity, Europe must not be forced to choose sides in the rivalry between the United States and China.

According to details, the top French military official has made these remarks during an interview with Le Figaro. He spoke about the dangers coming from powers that challenge the stability and international law, in particular, Russia, China, and Iran.

Army General Francois Lecointre further stated that we are heading towards a reorganization of the world order that is structured around the competition between the US and China. He said that every nation will be called upon to choose sides.

The French defense chief has said that it will be very difficult exactly because neither France, nor Europe is interested in it. While our relations with the United States cannot be called into question, which is essential, he said, adding that we must not allow ourselves to be drawn into an unnuanced confrontation that may emerge between US and China.

It is to be mentioned here that the United States and China have clashed over numerous issues in recent years, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and trade. The US has been pressuring Europe into removing Chinese telecom technology from their markets, among other things.
