Global Health Security Summit 2024: Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar – the Caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan – has called for greater collaboration at the international level to effectively respond to health emergencies.

According to the media reports, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar expressed his views while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the two-day Global Health Security Summit 2024 in Islamabad today (Wednesday, January 10). He said that our commitment should extend to establishing global frameworks that facilitate information sharing, joint research, and collaborative strategies for an effective response during emergencies.

On this occasion, PM Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said that beyond national strategies, we need to explore mechanisms for global funding that can support a nation in need, ensuring nobody is left behind in our pursuit of health security. He noted that the establishment of the international network of health laboratories sharing best practices and resources could serve as a linchpin in our collective defense against emerging threats.

The Premier claimed that emerging illnesses like COVID-19 and climate-related disasters, like Pakistan’s historic floods in 2022, are harming the health of the country’s people as well as having social and economic repercussions. He underlined how critical it is to include climate resilience in health systems and policies. He emphasized a common goal in which everyone has the right to health security rather than it being a privilege. He claimed that COVID-19 has given us priceless insights into the significance of cooperation, readiness, and a coordinated effort.

According to the prime minister, creating a proactive and linked global health ecosystem should be the goal of our shared vision rather than merely responding to catastrophes. Additionally, he underlined the necessity of harmonizing rules and setting global standards for food safety to guarantee the best possible protection for the world’s population.

During his speech, Dr. Nadeem Jan, the Minister for National Health Services, stated that Pakistan has been a strong advocate for international health security, leading cooperative initiatives towards a more secure and safe world. He claimed that this meeting demonstrates our dedication to and awareness of everyone’s health needs, particularly those of the oppressed. He claimed that a long-lasting victory for mankind will result from the equity-based actions and choices we make now.

Speaking at the Global Health Security Summit 2024, Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani said that Pakistan is in favor of amending the 2005 International Health Regulations and implementing a pandemic tool that is founded on the values of inclusivity, equity, global solidarity, and international cooperation. According to him, Pakistan is still working to build a resilient system through increased international engagement with the World Health Organization and other international partners.

The Foreign Minister stated that by pooling our resources and expertise, we can better position ourselves to address threats to and crises involving global health. According to him, having access to technology is also essential for facilitating the mass manufacturing of vaccinations and medications that can save lives, which is necessary for a successful reaction to pandemics and other medical emergencies. The COVID-19 pandemic made clear how urgently international cooperation must be strengthened to combat dangers to world health. For early illness identification and spread, he stated, a robust disease surveillance system encompassing the human and plant spectrum must be developed.

Speaking on the occasion, US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome commended the government of Pakistan for their efforts in addressing one of the biggest problems facing the global health security system. According to him, the best approach to handle risks to regional and global health is through coordination with partners. He claimed that new infectious diseases may be prevented, identified, and treated by a robust and adaptable public health system. He asserted that nations can achieve this if they have the political will and commitment to fund global health security.

Dr. Hani Jokhdar, the Saudi delegation’s head of state and minister of health, emphasized during his speech at the summit that the public health policy’s execution must take the global health security agenda as its priority. According to him, Saudi Arabia has consistently supported the implementation of resilience and readiness for global health security. To combat the silent pandemic, he asked the nations that are part of the Global Health Security Agenda to make extra efforts.
