The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of worldwide music, but as events in Israel and Gaza continue, now does not feel like a time for a global celebration, according to Paramount. “With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning,” the company said in a statement. “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.”

The most catastrophic escalation in the conflict in decades occurred on October 7, when Hamas launched an enormous offensive on Israel, killing 1,400 people and kidnapping another 200. According to Palestinian health officials, at least 3,700 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel initiated retaliatory air attacks. The performance has been delayed until November 2024, according to Paramount.
