Monsoon 2024: The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed all relevant institutions to remain on high alert across the country during Monsoon season.
According to the media reports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued these directives while chairing a meeting regarding national preparedness for the Monsoon 2024 in Islamabad today (Tuesday, July 2). He also constituted a high-level committee to deal with any emergency during the Monsoon season.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed the National Disaster Management Authority to assist all provincial governments and related institutions regarding Monsoon. He said advisory to the people living in affected areas regarding any expected situation in an emergency due to monsoon should be ensured. He said advance information should be disseminated to farmers and people living alongside the rivers and canals through media daily.

The first and second weeks of this month are predicted to bring substantial monsoon rains in every region, according to the briefing given at the conference. It was also said that this year’s monsoon rains will shift from Pakistan’s southeast to its north. The first week of this month is predicted to bring rain to the Potohar area and the eastern portion of Punjab, while the second and fourth weeks will bring significant rain to Hyderabad, Karachi, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah, Sukkur, and Karachi.
The committee was informed that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to experience monsoon rainfall till the third week of the next month. In the second, fourth, and first two weeks of this month, there will likely be significant rainfall in Balochistan’s coastline and bordering regions with Sindh. Partial rains are predicted for Gilgit-Baltistan this month, while heavy rains are predicted for the first three weeks of August. Massive rains and landslides are predicted for the first three weeks of this month in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The preparations for handling any emergency resulting from the nation’s monsoon rains were also briefed at the conference.
The Pakistan Army’s soldiers and rescue organizations, such as NDMA and PDMA, were informed that conditions in the impacted regions remain always high alert. People are using a mobile app that NDMA designed to provide them with advanced information, weather reports, and monsoon notifications. To handle any disaster, a National Monsoon Contingency Plan has already been created and sent to the pertinent organizations and provincial governments, it was reported at the meeting.
