Greece Boat Tragedy: A day of mourning is being observed in the country today (Monday, June 19) over the tragic deaths of Pakistani migrants in the ship sinking incident near the coast of Greece on Wednesday.

According to the media reports, observing the day of mourning regarding the Greece Boat Tragedy was announced by Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif yesterday. He also formed a four-member committee to probe the facts of the incident and directed law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to trace those involved in human smuggling.

The reports further stated that the national flag will fly at half-mast today and special prayers will be offered for the deceased.

According to a European rescue support charity, an overloaded boat with approximately 750 passengers on board sank off the coast of Greece last week. More than 100 individuals were killed, and hundreds more are still missing.

According to initial information shared by survivors of the shipwreck, at least 400 Pakistanis, 200 Egyptians, and 150 Syrians, including around two dozen Syrian women and young children, were traveling on the trawler; however, authorities have not yet confirmed the exact number of Pakistanis onboard.

On Saturday, the Foreign Office announced that 12 Pakistanis had been discovered alive, while National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf urged the government to “immediately investigate” the tragedy.
