The Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Marriyum Aurangzeb has expressed satisfaction over Pakistan’s improvement in the World Press Freedom Index by seven points.

According to the details, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb expressed her views in a statement today (Friday, May 5th). She said this is a reflection of tolerating differences of opinion and indicates also that we are in the right direction with good intent.

In her statement, the Information Minister said the report by Reporters Without Borders shows that the government is pursuing a democratic path vis-a-vis the media. She said that this report manifests the difference between a democratic government and the undemocratic imposed government.

Marriyum Aurangzeb said that efforts are afoot to erase the stigma of ‘Media Predator’ on Pakistan’s face. She pointed out that Imran Khan was declared Media Predator in 2022 and during the last year of that dark reign, the country dropped 12 points on World Press Freedom Index. During the four years of Imran Khan’s government, Pakistan’s overall ranking fell by eighteen points.

Imran Khan’s four years of mess are gradually being cleared, she said, adding that the world is also recognizing that the era where different oppressive tactics were used against the media is gradually coming to an end. She felicitated the Pakistani nation and the media over the improvement in Pakistan’s ranking on the World Press Freedom Index.

The Information further stated that it is welcoming that this progress on the media front has been achieved during the one-year leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. She expressed her gratitude to God Almighty that the country has yet again earned a good name after exiting from FATF grey list.

Paying glowing tributes to the journalists and their associations who waged a struggle for the freedom of expression and braved all sorts of oppression, she said this journey of improvement will be continued with their cooperation and guidance. She expressed the commitment to give further impetus to this constitutional right of freedom of expression and media.
