Belgium: Deputy Prime Minister requests leave application for husband’s care

The Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Belgium, Sophie Wilmès has requested a leave of absence to care for her cancer-stricken husband.

In this regard, Sophie Wilmès released a painful press release on her social media account today and stated the reasons for her leave from work. She said her husband had brain cancer which is getting worse.

The Deputy Prime Minister said, “Life unfortunately takes many painful turns. Today the disease has suddenly entered our home, especially for my husband who, like many other men, women and children, is fighting aggressive brain cancer.”

“As a minister, I have a responsibility to be available to my country at all times. However, my husband and children need me in this difficult time as my husband has always been for us,” she said.

After consultation with the Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and her party, Sophie Wilmès announced that she is taking leave from her post without pay.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sophie Wilmès has also been the Prime Minister of Belgium in 2019-20, while she is currently serving as the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in a coalition government.
