Dissident MPs cannot cast vote: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Pakistan, in a major development, ruled that the dissident members of the parliament (MPs) cannot cast their votes against their parliamentary party’s directives.

Issuing its verdict on the presidential reference seeking the interpretation of Article 63(A) of the Constitution on Tuesday, the Supreme Court has said that the article concerned cannot be interpreted in isolation.

The refrained from issuing a verdict on the lifetime disqualification of the dissident members and said that since it was a constitutional issue under Article 63(A), therefore, the Parliament should look into the law.

The Supreme Court apex wrapped up the hearing of reference against the dissident members today, which was filed by President Arif Alvi on March 21. The hearings continued for 58 days since its filing. Earlier today, the court had reserved a verdict related to the hearing.
