Former South Korean president sentenced to 20 years on corruption receives pardon

The former president of South Korea, Park Geun-hye has been pardoned to promote “national unity” 18 months after she was sentenced to 20 years on corruption charges.

According to media reports, the incumbent South Korean government has announced the news on Friday and stated that it was designed to overcome unfortunate past history, promote people’s unity and join hands for the future.

The incumbent government of President Moon Jae-in hoped that it will open a new era of integration.

It is to be mentioned here that Park Geun-hye was the first female president of South Korea and she was forced out of office in 2017 over a corruption scandal. She repeatedly claimed she is innocent of all charges and stated that she never accepted any money.

The 69-year-old former President was the third South Korean president to be convicted on corruption charges, following Chun Doo-hwan and Roh Tae-woo.
