Govt imports 100 thousand tons of sugar, prices of commodity to reduce by 15 to 20 rupees per kg: Hammad

Government has imported One Hundred Thousand tons of sugar, which will reduce prices of the commodity by 15 to 20 rupees per kilograms, the Federal Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar has said.

According to media reports, the Hammad Azhar has stated this while addressing a joint news conference with Minister for National Food Security Syed Fakhar Imam and Minister for Information and Broadcasting Syed Shibli Faraz in Islamabad on Friday.

The Industries Minister further said that the imported sugar has arrived at Karachi port. He said that 40,000 tons have been released to the Punjab Government to provide the sweetener at controlled rates.

“Sugar mills have also assured to start the crushing season early as decided with the Punjab government, which will too help reduce prices of sugar in the domestic market,” he added.

The Minister for National Food Security Syed Fakhar Imam has said about wheat shortage that 1.8 million tons of the food staple in total will be imported by January next year. He said the private sector has so for imported 2,20,000 tons of wheat.

The Information Minister, Shibli Faraz said, while responding to a question, that the government does not have any intention to privatize Pakistan Television.
