One megawatt Solar Photovoltaic panels have been inaugurated by the President Dr. Arif Alvi on Wednesday at the Presidency making it among one of the few presidencies in the world fully powered by green energy.

According to media reports, under the President’s Green Initiative, the solarization project was kicked off in partnership with Engro Corporation where a net metering system will contribute 100 percent surplus energy to the national grid and the initiative will lead to an annual decrease of 1450 tons of CO2 emissions and an annual contribution of Rs.32 million to the national exchequer.

On the occasion, the President has said that Pakistan remained committed to realizing the untapped renewable energy potential – in hydro, solar, and wind – and to shift its energy mix to 60 percent clean energy by 2030. He stressed the need to utilize alternative sources for power generation to fully achieve the goals of clean and green energy.

Dr Arif Alvi has said that switching to renewable energy is vital to reduce the impact of climate change. He mentioned that the Billion Tree Tsunami project by the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan is another step in the right direction to preserve the natural resources of the country, facing vulnerability to climate change.

“A balanced strategy of eco-system is important to control the depletion of natural resources,” he added.
