Why journalists suffers violence in Pakistan: Senator Ali Zafar

Senator Ali Zafar has suggested allocation of funds for the establishment of a commission along with a secretariat whose terms of reference should be to enquire into why journalists have suffered violence in Pakistan.

Speaking at Senate on Tuesday, Senator Ali Zafar has said that there is a fundamental right enshrined in our Constitution known as the “Freedom of Speech”. He said that the fundamental right is the mother of all fundamental rights and, without this, democracy cannot work and flourish in any country.

The Senator further stated that the frontline soldiers for the implementation and enforcement of freedom of speech are journalists. He said that even the civil society cannot utilize this freedom without journalists.

Ali Zafar said that he witnessed a number of incidents in which the journalists have suffered violence in Pakistan. He suggested that in this budget allocation of funds should be made for the establishment of a commission along with a secretariat whose terms of reference should be to enquire into why this is happening to journalists in Pakistan.

“Why there are incidents of violence against journalists in Pakistan and then to suggest how this can be stopped. The wholesome commission like this is the need of the hour,” he added.
