Philippines won’t cooperate with ICC killings probe

The spokesman of the President Rodrigo Duterte, Harry Roque has said that the Philippines won’t cooperate with a planned International Criminal Court (ICC) investigation into the thousands of deaths that took place during Duterte’s war on drugs.

According to media reports, Harry Roque has made these remarks while speaking on Tuesday. He dismissed the requirement for foreign intervention into the deaths during the nation’s war on drugs.

The President’s spokeman has said that they don’t need foreigners to investigate killings in the drug war because the legal system is working in the Philippines. He claimed that the International Criminal Court launching a probe into the killings would be ‘legally erroneous’ and was ‘politically motivated’.

“We wouldn’t participate as we are no longer members of the ICC,” he added.

According to local news, the police alone had killed 7,884 alleged suspects up to September last year, while some human rights groups have suggested it is as high as 27,000.
