“Together, the members of BRICS… make up a quarter of the global economy, account for a fifth of global trade, and are home to more than 40% of the world’s population,” South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said during a speech on Sunday. On his fourth state visit, Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit South Africa, the South African president announced. He asserted that the BRICS Summit, President Xi Jinping’s state visit, and the numerous bilateral meetings we will have on the sidelines of the summit with President Lula da Silva of Brazil, Prime Minister Modi of India, and many other heads of state, will all have an impact on our relations with other nations and South Africa’s standing in the international community.

More than 20 nations have submitted formal applications to join the group, according to Ramaphosa, and several more have expressed interest. He stated that South Africa is in favor of the BRICS organization growing. Beyond the objectives of its existing members, BRICS has worth. In order for its initiatives to be more successful, BRICS must form alliances with other nations that share its goals and viewpoints.

In September 2006, the first gathering of foreign ministers from the BRICS countries took place concurrently with the UN General Assembly. BRIC was the group’s previous name before South Africa joined. In June 2009, the inaugural BRIC Summit took place in Yekaterinburg, Russia. A year later, South Africa received an invitation to join BRICS and went to the third summit in Sanya, China, in 2011. The three main areas of cooperation that BRICS is centered on are political and security, financial and economic, and cultural.
