Following the gang rape of a Spanish tourist traveling through the distant east of India on a motorbike with her spouse, three men were taken into custody today (Saturday, March 02).

According to the Indian media reports, the gang rape of the Spanish tourist took place on Friday night in the Dumka district of the eastern state of Jharkhand, where the couple had stopped to camp the night in a tent.

At about 11:00 p.m., the woman managed to get to a police patrol van, and police officer Pitamber Singh Kherwar informed The Times of India newspaper that she was transported to the hospital for treatment. According to Kherwar, authorities were searching for more suspects and had already apprehended three persons about the crime. The tourist is being treated at a local hospital in Dumka and an investigation is underway, reports said.

The National Crime Records Bureau reported that, on average, there were around ninety rapes registered in India per day in 2022. However, a lot of them remain unreported because of the stigma that surrounds victims and people’s mistrust of police investigations. Convictions are still uncommon because of the lengthy case backlog in India’s congested criminal court system.

It is pertinent to mention here that in 2012, news throughout the world was dominated by the infamous gang rape and killing of an Indian student. In December of that year, Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old student of physiotherapy, was attacked and sexually molested by five men and a juvenile while on a bus in New Delhi. She was left for dead. After weeks of protests and an international emphasis on India’s high rates of sexual violence, the horrifying crime led to a reform in the law that instituted the death penalty for rape.
