Pakistan and China agreed to upgrade CPEC and advance the development of the mega project in the second phase.

According to the media reports, the understanding came during the meeting between the Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif, and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the historic Great Hall of the People in Beijing today (Saturday, June 8). The two leaders affirmed consensus on the upgrade of the CPEC and advancing the development of the mega project in the second phase during the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed the resolve for high-quality development of CPEC and fostered synergy between the development strategies of Pakistan and China through close coordination.

The Prime Minister praised President Xi’s innovative Belt and Road Initiative and Global Development Initiative, emphasizing that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the BRI’s flagship project, has made a substantial socioeconomic development contribution to Pakistan. He emphasized that Pakistan is fully committed to ensuring the safety and security of Chinese nationals, as well as the protection of Chinese projects and institutions in Pakistan.

The two leaders exchanged views on regional and global developments including Afghanistan, Palestine, and South Asia including the serious human rights situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
