Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Jail Bharo Tehreek has started in Lahore with hopes to counter the “attack on constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights” and the “economic meltdown” by the incumbent government.

According to the media reports, the arrival of PTI workers from the party office to Charing Cross Mall Road continues. The Vice-Chairman of the Party Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Azam Swati, Mian Mehmood-ul-Rashid, Dr. Murad Ras, Waleed Iqbal also reached the central office for the PTI Jail Bharo Tehreek.

Taking to Twitter, Imran Khan said that the PTI is set to start the Jail Bharo campaign for two main reasons. He wrote, “One, it is a peaceful, non-violent protest against the attack on our constitutionally-guaranteed fundamental rights. We are facing sham FIRs and NAB cases, custodial torture, attacks on journalists and social media people.”

The former Prime Minister further stated that the second is against the economic meltdown brought on by a “cabal of crooks who have money laundered billions in looted wealth and gotten NROs for themselves while crushing the people, especially, the poor and the middle class, under the burden of spiralling inflation and rising unemployment.”

Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 for a week around Mall Road, Main Boulevard Gulbarg and Civil Secretariat.

According to the reports, the caretaker government of Punjab has made a strategy, according to which there is no more capacity in the jails of Lahore, the arrested persons will have to be sent to Mianwali and DG Khan jails.
