Umar Akmal apologises to family, fans, and PCB for match-fixing row

The former batsman of the national cricket team, Umar Akmal has apologised to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and fans for failing to report to the PCB’s anti-corruption authorities that he had been approached by bookies.

In a video message on Wednesday, Umar Akmal has said that 17 months ago he committed a mistake which cost not only his career but also his cricket. He said that the only mistake he done is that he didn’t inform the Anti-Corruption Unit in time when some bookies approached him.

The batsman further stated that he had to face a 12-month suspension as a result due to the offence. He said that he couldn’t play cricket despite being a cricketer.

“I reflected on a lot of things during the time I was suspended, I have to the realisation that my actions had caused shame to Pakistan cricket,” he said.

Umar apologised to his family, to PCB and to cricket fans across the globe. “I, Umar Akmal, advise you all that as cricketers, you are the ambassadors of your country. Hence, keep your distance from any suspicious activity,” he added.

He also urged other cricketers to report to the PCB’s Anti-Corruption Unit as soon as possible, when they are approached by any suspicious persons.
