World Press Freedom Day 2024 is being observed today across the globe including Pakistan to create awareness about the importance of press freedom.

According to the media reports, this year the World Press Freedom Day has been dedicated to the importance of journalism and freedom of expression in the context of the current global environmental crisis.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in their messages on World Press Freedom Day 2024 have emphasized the need to initiate measures for the safety and security of the journalists enabling them to freely report on important issues. They paid tribute to the journalists, media workers, writers, and cameramen and lauded their fight for truth.

The President stated that an independent press is crucial for bringing attention to important global issues, busting misconceptions and false information, and acting as a social watchdog. According to him, the media is also essential in raising public awareness of global concerns including pollution, global warming, green technologies, and climate change.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that press and expression freedoms are essential to democracy, the defense of civil rights, and the ability to speak truth to power in society. He emphasized the need for the media and other stakeholders to work together to foster an environment that will support the efficient operation of the media. He stated that the government was adamant that the survival of democracy is guaranteed by the freedom of the press and expression. He gave his word that the current administration would do everything in its power to support the media sector and find solutions to the problems it faces.
