Justin Trudeau nominates first Muslim judge Justice Mahmud Jamal to Canadian Supreme Court

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has nominated the first ever Muslim judge Justice Mahmud Jamal as the next member of the Supreme Court of Canada. He will replace Justice Rosalie Abella and will become the first Muslim judge to take the seat.

In a statement on Twitter, PM Justin Trudeau said, “Justice Mahmud has had a distinguished career, throughout which he’s remained dedicated to serving others. He’ll be a valuable asset to the Supreme Court – and that’s why, today, I’m announcing his historic nomination to our country’s highest court.”

According to the reports, Mahmud Jamal was born in Nairobi in 1967 and his family moved to United Kingdom in 1969. After 12 years his family again shifted to Canada and settled in Edmonton in 1981. He studied his early educaqtion in Canada and UK. He spent a year at the London School of Economics before getting his economics degree from the University of Toronto. He studied common law and Quebec civil law in McGill before getting his graduate law degree from Yale Law School.

He was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 2019 and appeared in 35 appeals before the Canadian Supreme Court on civil, constitutional, criminal and regulatory issues. He wil take the charge of his post on 1st July in Supreme Court.
