Sultana Bibi – another female Pakistani mountaineer – has scaled K2, the second-highest mountain in the world, registering her name among the few women from the country who have made it to the summit of the savage mountain.

According to the media reports, Sultana Bibi completed her climb this morning (Monday, July 29), making history as the third Pakistani woman to achieve the feat in mountaineering. Samina Baig and Niala Kiani were the first two women to reach the peak of the 8,611-meter hill before Sultana. In July 2022, the former became the first woman from the country to summit K2, while the latter became the second, but with a different time difference.

In June, Sultana had left Skardu with two climbing teams, hoping to reach the unstable peak at the boundary between China and Pakistan. The other team was a combined expedition of Italian and Pakistani climbers, while Sultana’s squad consisted only of six female climbers from Pakistan. Renowned Pakistani mountaineer Sirbaz Ali guided the female climber to the world’s second-highest summit.

Mountaineer George Bell famously referred to K2 as the “savage mountain,” saying, “It’s a savage mountain that tries to kill you.” According to Ultimate Kilimanjaro, the mountain’s death zone has a fatality rate of about 23 per 100 climbers, making it a very deadly place for climbers.

Climbers face a serious risk of death due to the mountain’s very unpredictable weather, numerous avalanches and rock falls, and challenging routes to the top.
